Studying Mathematics at degree-level is about much more than just applying what you already know to a series of problems. It is a creative, investigative subject where you will push the boundaries of what is possible to achieve through thinking and then apply it to the world.
Course overview
Mathematics is designed to be intellectually stimulating and vocationally relevant. This course will appeal to students who like to tackle real-world challenges through the intellectual rigor and purity of approach that is inherent in mathematics. The programme will develop your skills in pure and applied aspects of the subject to an advanced level, combining these with training in probability, advanced statistics and data analysis. In your final year of study, you will tackle a piece of independent research, bringing together this comprehensive portfolio of skills to focus upon a research question of your choice. With support from the University’s careers and placements team, the skills and experience derived from this course should be readily transferable to graduate level employment across a range of sectors.
Course structure
This degree programme will develop your analytical skills as mathematicians in an integrated way alongside other skills that are essential in the modern world and workplace. We will motivate and formulate abstract concepts through real-world phenomena before developing the mathematical theory in an approach that blends Pure with Applied Mathematics. You will learn to apply these concepts and results in concrete, often interdisciplinary, applications using analytical as well as computational approaches.
Systematically developing your abilities to apply knowledge, work with others and to communicate your analysis to both specialists and non-specialists is the main priority of this novel programme of study. Throughout your studies, we will foster your understanding of future career options and the relevance of the acquired skills to the workplace. The course will allow you to gain work experience and develop professional contacts.
The core Mathematics content will develop your understanding of the areas of analysis, algebra and statistics. These areas constitute well-developed mathematical conceptual frameworks which underpin countless applications in all areas. At the beginning of the programme, we will consolidate your current knowledge and establish a solid foundation before taking you to an advanced level over the course of your four years of studies. You will explore content "hands-on" through creative problem-solving, often exploiting powerful computational tools. You will have specific dedicated training in computing, creative problem solving, communication, data analysis and entrepreneurship, which will ideally equip you for a broad range of future careers.
